An End Of Season Message from the Head Coach Jackson Waldron
After a full season off due to COVID, the Polar Bears came back in full force for the 2021/2022 season. The team welcomed back seven veteran players this year while bringing in a strong rookie class of eleven new skaters. Leading the team behind the bench was Jackson Waldron and Tim Butcher working as the assistant coach. On the ice the team was led by second year player and first year captain, Angus Brodeur. Andreas Meshcheryakov and Jonah Petrus rounded out the leadership group as assistant captains.
The team had a strong start to the season with wins against Stanford and UC Davis before heading to Cheney, Washington to play in an early season showcase. The winning ways continued with a 4-2 win over Washington State to start the trip. A one goal loss to Utah Valley followed by a 6-0 loss to Eastern Washington had the team hungry to close the trip out with a 5-0 win against Gonzaga.
The following weekend saw the Polar Bears host two phenomenal games against San Jose State. Game one resulted in a hard fought tie and game two was headed for another tie, until first year standout Toby Petrus scored the game winner in overtime. This would mark the first win in what would become a very good stretch for the Bears season.
The Polar Bears continued to roll into November starting the month with two wins against UC Davis. A Southern California trip then saw the team beat USC 9-2. Two days later and on the back of their goaltenders stellar play, the team secured a 4-2 against UCSB. Although filled with cancelations and injuries, the Polar Bears would finish the first semester with a 9-2-1 record.
Their winning ways continued into the following semester, starting it off with home wins against Cal Lutheran and Santa Clara. The next weekend the team headed to Arizona for matchups against Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon. While not playing their best hockey and dealing with a short bench due to injury, the team would suffer from two decisive losses.
The next weekend the team hosted Stanford and UC Davis as they tried to get back on track. The team was able to put out much better performances but a lack of finishing touch and strong play from their opposition led to the team losing both games over the weekend.
As they approached the final weekend of the season, the team was determined to close out the season on a high note. The first matchup against Santa Clara resulted in a 7-2 loss and brought the losing streak to five games. Although the bench was short and the losing streak was long, morale remained high as the team looked to right the ship in the final game of the season.
With a 10 PM puck drop against Davis, the Polar Bears got off to a hot start with Mason Siemsen scoring in the first minute of play. Neither team held a two goal lead and with 3 minutes left, the Polar Bears were up 5-4. A tripping penalty and a defensive breakdown led to the Aggies tying the game with 18 seconds remaining. Fourth year forward Grant Snetsinger was a force all night and concluded the game with the OT winner, giving Snetsinger a hatrick in his final game with the Polar Bears. The Bears would finish the season with a 12-7-1 record.
Between returning to play, cancellations, COVID hurtles and an unprecedented amount of injuries for the club, they worked through the adversity to make this a very productive season for the program. The club would like to specifically thank Andreas Meshcheryakov and Alejandro Barajas for the three years they dedicated to the club as well as Grant Snetsinger for his four years with the team. The team is excited to announce Jackson Waldron and Tim Butcher will be returning to coach next year and the majority of the team will be returning as well.
We cannot express how excited we are for next season in general and especially to get our fans back at home games. It is such an honor to represent this community and having our fans in the stands is a great source of fuel and pride for the team. If anyone has any general questions about the club or is interested in joining the team next season, please contact coach Jackson Waldron at: [email protected]
