The SRJC Polar Bears hosted Cal Berkeley Friday night at Snoopy’s Home Ice for the first game of the 2012-13 season. The Polar Bears came out fired up and ready for battle in front of over 500 fans. “The crowd had a lot of energy and as a player you feed off the reactions of the fans” said Polar Bears’ forward Spencer Wright about the atmosphere during the game.
It took the Polar Bears only 24 seconds to break the ice with their first goal when Alexi Kulikouskiy beat the Cal Berkeley net-minder with a wrist shot. After that the two teams took turns scoring goals, keeping the game close and exciting for the fans.
Rookie Spencer Wright broke into his college hockey career with 2 goals in his first game as a Polar Bear. Chris Whitten, Don Coyle, and Josiah Nikkel also scored their first goals in a Polar Bear uniform.
Rookie goaltender Jacob Pavsek held his own with an 18 save effort to get his first win as a Polar Bear.
Next Friday the Polar Bears travel to Vacaville to play Sacramento State and then return to Santa Rosa Saturday night to face them again at Snoopy’s Home Ice.
The Polar Bears are pleased to announce their 2012-13 sponsorship team. The success of the Polar Bears season is credited largely to their sponsors, who lend their names and financial support to the club. As a club hockey team the Polar Bears receive no financial support from the Santa Rosa Junior College. The money raised from the sponsorships goes towards supporting team operations, travel expenses, ice time costs and league fees, which can total up to $45,000 for a single season. Without the willingness of local businesses college hockey in Santa Rosa would not exist.
West Side Grill, Sam for Play Café, Westec Tanks, Hampton Inn of Rohnert Park, Darcy’s Fine Jewelers and Pine Creak Rentals have signed with the Polar Bears as platinum level sponsors. The Polar Bears director of marketing states "It's exciting to see the growth of our hockey club within the community, as our exposure increases so will our sponsorships and the returns and rewards they gain from us and our fans". Several other businesses are supporting the SRJC hockey club as gold, silver and bronze level sponsors. Todd Schapmire RE/MAX Full Spectrum real estate, Commercial Appliance Repair Service, Electric-Crayon and Fitz Designz, are committed to bring the 2012-13 college hockey season to you, right here in Santa Rosa.
