All About the Numbers: THE BROWNLEE FACTOR

SRJC’s Top 10 statistics of the 2015-16 season: No. 5— Rookie Points Leader Max Brownlee

We’re not gonna lie, we waited a long time for Max Brownlee to join the SRJC Hockey team. We heard about him in youth hockey, saw him around the rink, felt heartbroken when they said he got injured. So when Brownlee finally put on the JC sweater we knew we were in for some fun.
"Coming into this season I felt enthusiastic to be apart of a successful hockey team," he said. "I was looking forward to playing at a collegiate level, and hoping to mesh well with the team and do my best."

And boy oh boy he did not disappoint.

Brownlee flew under the radar for a majority of the season— not because he wasn’t killing it on the ice, but because the spotlight isn't really for him. Don't get us wrong, the kid loves his facetime, but in moderation.

He scored SRJC’s first goal of the season against UC Berkeley, and another later on  that game. Brownlee backed up those first two goals with 13 more on the season. He helped teammates score 14 times, and had four power plays, two shorties and two game-winners.

Spending a majority at center on the second line, Brownlee came up big in several games: ruining SDSU’s shutout Nov. 6, scoring the game-winner the next day and a four-point night against San Francisco State.

Brownlee also scored SRJC's last goal of the season on Feb. 5 against San Jose State University. Can you believe this rookie netted the first and last goals of the entire season? We don't think that's ever been done!

#86 had several different linemates this season, skating with nearly every player on the SRJC Hockey team. It makes you wonder how he stayed so productive all year long with his wingers changing so often. We think it's because he's magic, but he so humbly credits the coaching staff.

"My confidence improved as the season went on, and as I spent more time on the ice and by having supportive teammates," Brownlee stressed about his overall productivity. "There came a point where I got into a groove and just kept trying to do my best."

Each season a new rookie comes into Snoopy's Home Ice looking to charm the crowd with his cellys and become the freshman poster boy. And even though we were Team Brownlee before he even put on an SRJC jersey— seriously, #1 fan here— no one predicted that it'd be this hometown kid who'd take the No. 1 rookie spot this season.

Yes, Max Brownlee was pretty special this year. His talent on the ice is only surpassed by his generosity, humilty and kindness off the ice. And because of that we couldn’t feel sorrier for running our mouth and jinxing his 11-game, team record point streak that ended Jan. 29 against UC Davis.

Again, our bad bro. OUR bad.

Tune in Thursday, March 17 to see what No. 4 is on SRJC’s Top 10 Statistics of the 2015-16 season.
