SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA (August 23, 2017): With exactly one month to go before the puck drops on the 2017-18 season, the Santa Rosa Junior College Ice Hockey team is pleased to release its official schedule for the upcoming year. The team plays 32 games, 13 home and 19 away, over the six-month season. This is one of the heaviest schedules for the Polar Bears, with many American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II heavy hitters lined up. SRJC kicks off the season with a 7:30 p.m. game Sept. 23 against franchise rival UC Berkeley. Facing their former parent club for the seventh time in eight years, the Polar Bears have never lost an opening night game at Snoopy's Home Ice. A week later, SRJC heads out on its first of three roads trips. For the first time in club history, SRJC will travel to Minnesota Sept. 28-Oct. 1 to play four teams in as many days. The team faces the University of St. Thomas (Sept. 28), Minnesota State University, Mankato (Sept. 29), the University of Minnesota (Sept. 30) and St. Cloud University (Oct. 1). Each of these ACHA DII clubs are from universities that host NCAA Division I hockey teams.
The month of October is packed with Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association action, as SRJC takes on four different league rivals. Only the highly-touted rematch against Cal State Long Beach Oct. 11 at home breaks up the PCHA onslaught. A Southern California trip (Nov. 17-19) highlights November, along with a first-ever appearance at Snoopy's Home Ice for the Oregon State University Ducks (Nov. 10-11). The Polar Bears and the Ducks split each of their two previous two-games matches. The return of Stanford University and Fresno State University to the schedule is another highly anticipated set of games. SRJC only saw Stanford in last year's PCHA Tournament, but have an away and home series Feb. 2-3, 2018. Fresno State returns to official ACHA competition after its hiatus, joining Stanford as PCHA members for the 2017-18 season. SRJC sees Fresno three times, including a Dec. 9 home game. The most notable item on the schedule is the sole match against longtime rival, UC Davis. While SRJC still has room for games to be added, the only confirmed meet-up between the two teams is Oct. 28 at Snoopy's. SRJC's last road trip comes in the New Year, as the Polar Bears head back to Southern California Jan. 25-28. They'll face PAC-12 powerhouse, the University of Southern California, along with Fresno State, Cal Lutheran University and UC Santa Barbara. The 2017-18 schedule is a perfect mix of familiar foes and new opponents. The competition will surely test SRJC's resilience as a second-year DII team. After failing to garner a regional playoff bid and a division ranking last year, the Polar Bears are primed to make waves in the ACHA once again. |
