​For the second consecutive year the SRJC Hockey team lost its first game of the New Year to Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association rival Santa Clara University. Despite a solid effort by its entire roster, SRJC fell 9-6 Jan. 15.

Playing with a new roster of only 11, including three new players getting their first SRJC ice time this season, there were plenty of encouraging, and head-scratching, moments. 
John Zerbe got it started seven minutes in with his first goal of the year. New player Matt Sullivan followed, netting his first of the night just two minutes later. 

“I was feeling good. The puck felt good on my stick. I had two good forwards up there helping me,” he said of each of his two goals. “We had numbers in front of their net and I got the opportunity to just separate myself from their D both times. It really was a complete team effort.”

Losing four-straight games was not what the SRJC Hockey team had in mind when it began the 2016-17 season. But after a grueling string of losses in early October that was the reality. It wasn't until back-to-back home games to close out the month did the Polar Bears right the ship and put a check in the win column.
 
SRJC's first road trip of the year left everyone scratching their heads after the team went winless over the three-game weekend.
 
The first game against new Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association opponent UC Santa Barbara had few positives—the biggest being SRJC's refusal to back down from a fight; both literally and figuratively.

Not even a championship high could sustain the Polar Bears this past weekend as they failed to defeat San Jose State University once again on its home ice this season. SRJC fell 7-3 to the Division II team Feb. 5 in the final game of its 2015-16 campaign.

Coming off a momentous Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association victory over UC Davis Jan. 30, SRJC was confident it would take the final game of the season series against San Jose State. After all, the Polar Bears took the last two matches — a 4-3 shootout win Oct. 3 and a 6-3 win Nov. 20.

 That was the chant echoing through Snoopy's Home Ice Jan. 30 as the SRJC Hockey team defeated UC Davis 7-3 to take home its fourth straight Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association Championship title.

Playing in front of a sold out, home crowd for the first time in their PCHA tenure, the Polar Bears couldn't have been more confident going into a championship match. The team beat Davis 9-5 just the night before, thanks in part to excellent goaltending by Jacob Pavsek and Josiah Nikkel's four-goal night.
