SRJC’s Top 10 statistics of the 2015-16 season: No. 1 — A Thank You to our fansWe had a hard time coming up with a No. 1 statistic to end this little series of ours. Mostly, because after nine of these articles our creativity had reached its end point. But after the March 25 alumni game we got to thinking about the great moments of this last decade of SRJC Hockey. And no matter what memory came to mind it all had ONE common factor: you, the Polar Bear faithful.
That is why our fans— our friends, our family, our entire support system that enables us to do what we love — comes in at No. 1 in all the categories that really matter. SRJC’s Top 10 statistics of the 2015-16 season: No. 2 — First-year Head Coach Blake Johnson and Assistant Coach Nick HarrisWe cried for days last season when Blake Johnson decided to hang up his skates and retire from the American Collegiate Hockey Association. After five years together we got used to seeing him in the No. 7 jersey, and calling him up when we needed something handled. Safe to say we were a mess over our favorite Polar Bear leaving. But General Manager Tom Billeter put a smile back on our face when he named Johnson head coach in July 2015.
SRJC’s Top 10 statistics of the 2015-16 season: No. 3 — Points leader Josiah NikkelFor years we’ve watched Josiah Nikkel dangle his way around opposing skaters to carve his name at the top of SRJC’s points leader list.
He’s led the SRJC Hockey team in points for three years, totaling 92 goals and 97 assists in 68 career games. With that kind of production on his resumè, there wasn't any real doubt he wouldn't be at the top of the leaderboard once again this year. However, Nikkel began the season a little slow — slow for a superstar like him, not for ordinary folks like us. Sophomore forward Matt Katicich actually held the points leader spot for a good chunk of the first half. Katicich had more goals than Nikkel, but only half the assists. Seems the SRJC Hockey team isn't ready to close the books on this year just yet, announcing today that it will play one final game before officially capping the 2015-16 season.
Polar Bears from the last decade of SRJC Hockey will suit up at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, March 25 at Snoopy's Home Ice for another exciting blue and white alumni game. Fans can expect to see several big names returning to their old stomping grounds, with a couple familiar faces from the rebranding years highlighting this year's alumni squad. SRJC’s Top 10 statistics of the 2015-16 season: No. 4 — Goaltenders Hi, we’re the SRJC Hockey team and we’re goalie hoarders. And proud of it!
This season we housed four goalies — we tried to have five but Dominic Jones decided to play out on the lines instead. But four seemed to be our lucky number, and it gave head coach Blake Johnson quite an arsenal to choose from. Chris Tomaszewski and Jacob Pavsek spent most of the time in net, clocking more than 1,425 minutes combined. Both guys have several seasons under their belts, providing much needed experience to the team's defensive core. |
