Enemy squads got a chance at 134 power play opportunities (excluding DQ’s, misconducts and coincidentals), but the Polar Bear defense shut down their opponents 113 times this season.  Kicking off SRJC’s Top 10 statistics of the 2015-16 season: No. 10- Penalties.
It's no secret that the SRJC Hockey team has an undying love for the penalty box. Seriously, players camped out there so much this season we’re thinking of charging them rent. The Polar Bears took 166 penalties in 25 games for a total of 454 minutes— that’s a 95-minute increase from the 2014-15 season. While the team incurred a variety of different infractions, the most common were roughing (30) and tripping (24). A close third was unsportsmanlike conduct and interference (both at 15).  (The following is a satirical twist on an end of the season statistical breakdown.)
There are two things in this world that Polar Bear players possibly love more than they love playing hockey: facetime and stats. Every week players pester us with inquiries about what their point status is and when they’ll get to hear about it online. Am I beating so-and-so in points? How many points do I need to beat so-and-so? You know I got an assist on that play, right?  With a rookie coach, new captain and a relatively freshman team, there were a lot of questions heading into SRJC’s 2015-16 season. Could a player-turned-coach garner enough respect to put together a winning season? Can a first-year captain fill the shoes left by one of the greatest leaders SRJC ever had? Would the Polar Bears newest campaign falter from lack of veteran talent?
These questions lingered through the highs and lows of this season. But the Polar Bears’ commitment to each other and the name on their jerseys silenced the doubt, producing a cohesive squad and another well-deserved championship. Before the official puck drop last September, SRJC knew there’d be some growing pains. Only 15 out of 30 players returned from the previous year — just five of whom had more than one season under their belt. Luckily, returning players knew they had to set the tone from the get-go.  Not even a championship high could sustain the Polar Bears this past weekend as they failed to defeat San Jose State University once again on its home ice this season. SRJC fell 7-3 to the Division II team Feb. 5 in the final game of its 2015-16 campaign.
Coming off a momentous Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association victory over UC Davis Jan. 30, SRJC was confident it would take the final game of the season series against San Jose State. After all, the Polar Bears took the last two matches — a 4-3 shootout win Oct. 3 and a 6-3 win Nov. 20. |
