For the fourth-straight season, the SRJC Hockey team is headed to the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association championship game. But unlike years' past, this season the Polar Bears get a chance at glory in their own barn.
As one of the top two teams in the PCHA, SRJC is set to face UC Davis at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at Snoopy's Home Ice. This is the first time since joining the PCHA prior to the 2012-13 season that SRJC will host the title game. In the past three years, the Polar Bears garnered the PCHA's top honors three times on the road. Twice the team traveled to South Lake Tahoe and once to Vacaville. Because of the strange nature of this year's league, this game is set as a winner takes all event. Normally, four teams compete for the division title. As with all PCHA Tournaments, the teams will charge admission. This may come as a shock to SRJC fans as Polar Bears' games areally usually free. General admission is $5, $3 for students with ID, cash or check only. Kids under 12 years of age and all Santa Rosa Flyers youth are free. If you previously purchased V.I.P hospitality tickets or reserved seating, the admission fee is waved. All attendees will be entered to win a special SRJC prize pack with paid admission. The team will also have several raffle and prize opportunities throughout the game. SRJC looks to be only the second team in PCHA history to win the Adams Cup four years in a row. This is a can't miss match for all Northern California hockey fans. But nothing was greater than their display of discipline and sportsmanship against a team that refused to play under pressure.

The game now moves from a 7 a.m. start time to 5 p.m. matinée at Snoopy's Home Ice.

The Polar Bears head down south this week to take on College of the Canyons (Jan. 14) and Division II opponent Cal State Fullerton (Jan. 15-16). While the team is still getting used to its new line combinations, players are focused on what needs to get done and what will get them the win. Starting off the weekend series, SRJC faces its longtime rival in CoC. This game is huge for the Polar Bears as the outcome sets the tone for the rest of the trip. Behind excellent goaltending by Chris Tomaszewski, the Polar Bears broke out in the second period with goals by Josiah Nikkel, Tim Buchter and David Lundgren. Santa Clara tied it up shortly after Nikkel's shot, but that is all Tomaszewski allowed. The veteran netminder saved 23 of 24 shots on goal in his seventh win of the season. |
